Introduction

Historical Background

Fong Yuen Study Hall, formerly the Chan Study Hall, was first built by the Chan clan of Tin Liu before the 1900s. The Chan Study Hall was rebuilt with Western influence and renamed as "Fong Yuen Study Hall", literally meaning a nice place for study, in the 1920s to 30s. During the Japanese Occupation, the Japanese Army invaded Ma Wan and troops were stationed in Fong Yuen Study Hall before they transferred to other stations. The study hall was then suspended and was reopened after the war.

The study hall, also nicknamed as "Senior Fong Yuen" (大芳園), was the first and the only primary school on island at the very beginning. The building is the only surviving pre-war historical school on the island to illustrate Ma Wan's educational development in the old days. In 1956, a new premise of a single-storey structure with two classrooms, Ma Wan Public Fong Yuen School (馬灣公立芳園學校) also nicknamed as "Junior Fong Yuen" (小芳園), was built nearby. It is now preserved in-situ and converted as a gallery in the Ma Wan Park. Due to the redevelopment of Ma Wan in 2002, the land of Tin Liu Tsuen including Fong Yuen Study Hall was resumed and site clearance was subsequently conducted by LandsD. Fong Yuen Study Hall was retained but was excluded from the Ma Wan Park development. From 2013 to 2016, Fong Yuen Study Hall was used as “Fong Yuen Study Hall” Tourism and Chinese Cultural Centre cum Ma Wan Residents Museum.

Architectural Merits

The building is a rectangular two-storey building of a combination of Chinese and Western architectural styles. It is believed that the building was built in the imitation of a shophouse in the urban area.

In front of the building, there is a garden. The frontcourt and the garden in front are surrounded by low brick walls with an arched entrance bearing the same architectural style of the building.
