Historical Background

Tai Tam Tuk Raw Water Pumping Station Staff Quarters Compound is located at Tai Tam Reservoir Road, Hong Kong. It was constructed by the Government under the schemes of Tai Tam and Tai Tam Tuk to cater for the ever-increasing demand for fresh water in the late nineteenth century to early twentieth century. The Staff Quarters Compound comprises the Senior Staff Quarters, Staff Quarters and No.2 Staff Quarters, constructed in 1905, 1907 and 1936 respectively for the staff of the Water Supplies Department to ensure smooth daily operation of the Tai Tam Tuk Raw Water Pumping Station. These three staff quarters (excluding the Store Building of Staff Quarters) were declared as monuments in 2009. Owing to the adoption of automated operation and centralised control for the pumping station, staff are no longer required to stay overnight and hence the staff quarters are now vacant.

Architectural Merits

The Senior Staff Quarters is located at the east of the Pumping Station, which consists of a two-storey main building and a single-storey servants’ quarters. Both buildings have white painted external façade and hipped tiled roof. The building façade has generally kept intact and most of the architectural features such as timber flooring, timber staircase, fireplaces and chimney breasts inside the main building have been retained. These two buildings are connected by a covered walkway.

The Staff Quarters and No.2 Staff Quarters are located at the west of the Pumping Station. The Staff Quarters consists of a two-storey quarters building and a single-storey store building, which are connected by a covered walkway. The quarters building is rectangular in shape and with open verandahs facing the sea. The original arched timber windows and hipped tiled roof at the quarters building have been retained. The No.2 Staff Quarters is a two-storey independent building with an open verandah at the upper level facing the sea. The building was constructed with fair-faced red bricks and along the bottom of external walls and the brick columns were finished with Shanghai plaster.
