The Blue House Cluster

The Blue House Cluster

The site of the Blue House was originally occupied by "Wah To Hospital", also known as "Wan Chai Kai Fong Hospital", which was listed in the 1872 Rate Book. It was possibly the first hospital in Wan Chai to provide Chinese medical services to local Chinese. It was then used as a temple for the God of Medicine, Wah To (or "Hua Tuo") after the hospital closed in 1886. The ground floor of 72 Stone Nullah Lane housed "Wah To Temple", which was subsequently replaced by a martial arts school in the 1950s and later by the existing acupuncture clinic in the 1960s. The ownership of 72, 72A and 74 Stone Nullah Lane was surrendered to the government in 1978, and the external elevations were painted blue then.

The Blue House Cluster comprises of three historic buildings, namely the Blue House at 72, 72A, 74, 74A Stone Nullah Lane, Yellow House at 2, 4, 6, 8 Hing Wan Street, Orange House at 8 King Sing Street and a piece of vacant Government land.

Wong Uk Village

Wong Uk Village

Wong Uk Village was founded some 200 years ago by a couple surnamed Wong from Xingning county of Guangdong province. In the 19th century, the island was a major station for travellers and goods plying between Guangdong and Kowloon. The village became a trading station for merchants and travellers, which prospered until the late 19th century. Most of the old buildings of the village fell into ruins or demolition due to the reclamation of Tide Cove for the development of the Sha Tin New Town. What remains is this old house standing as the only reminder of the history of Yuen Chau Kok. The building is a two-storey green-brick structure of about 100 years old, with fine mural paintings and traditional decorations.

Stone Houses

The Stone Houses are the only Chinese style tenement buildings remained in Hau Wong Temple New Village. They were built on the foundations of "Ho Ka Yuen" ("The Ho Family Garden") during the period 1941-1945. The Japanese Army demolished the ruins of Ho Ka Yuen House and divided the Ho Ka Yuen area into some eleven cottage-sites.
